AIR Studios was George Martin’s most ambitious project, opening in 1979 on the Caribbean island of Montserrat.
It became the premier destination for icons like The Police (Synchronicity), Dire Straits (Brothers in Arms), Elton John, and Paul McCartney.
However, in 1989, Hurricane Hugo devastated the island, destroying much of the equipment and the facilities, leading George Martin to decide against rebuilding at that time.
The final blow came in 1995 when the Soufrière Hills volcano erupted, burying a large part of the island in ash and forcing the creation of an 'exclusion zone.'
Today, the studios lie in ruins and abandoned, where you can still see the remains of the structure, the famous swimming pool, and the very spot where some of the greatest albums of the 80s were recorded.
